Dream Big - READ! Summer Library Program
This summer's theme, Dream Big -- READ! is about all things nocturnal -- dreams, stars and planets, bats, owls, spooky stories, and more. The programs are free and open to children of all abilities.
The programs will be held on Wednesdays from May 30th to June 27th. Preschoolers meet at 10:30 AM, kindergarten through second graders will meet at 12:30 PM and third through fifth graders will meet at 1:30 PM.
These programs are being coordinated by Jamie and Amber Van Cleave. Stop in at the library or call (712) 881-1312 for more information on scheduled events.
Check Out EBooks From The Library On Your Kindle
You can now check out eBooks from your library and read them on your Kindle mobile app! Most WILBOR eBooks are now compatible with Kindle, and the process will seem familiar to WILBOR and Kindle users.
"We've been waiting for the eBooks that we offer through WILBOR to be available to our patrons with Kindles and the Kindle app on their mobile devices, and we're excited that even more people will be able to make use of the downloadable eBooks," said the Library Director.
You will need an Amazon account to download to a Kindle or Kindle app, but you won't need a credit card- just an email address to create an account. If you already have an Amazon account and have been purchasing Kindle books, it will look familiar to you. Look for eBooks that have "Kindle Book" as an option on the WILBOR website, check them out as usual, but instead of "Download" you'll see a "Get for Kindle" button, which will take you to Amazon where you can "Get library book" and select the Kindle or app device to which you want to deliver the book.

All you need is your library card!

Libraries can't buy from Amazon or Barnes & Noble for e-content. To provide digital rights management (the thing that keeps pirates from pirating the loaned file) we have to pay a third-party vendor. We don't receive discounts. Many times we aren't allowed to purchase new releases. With paper books, we receive discounts, get new releases the day they come out, and in a pinch we can buy from any store or vendor with books. Our purchasing power is diminishing quickly in the virtual world, meaning we either can't get titles for you at all, or we can't afford to buy all the titles we should have available.
Publishers tell us their concern is about pirating. The vendor we pay for access creates digital rights management for our files to restrict pirating. These rights are no less restrictive than the copies you buy personally. There is no absolute way to prevent pirating on the Internet. Libraries are not part of the problem, we're part of the solution. Offer readers and listeners limited access to a file paid for by the library and the need for piracy is reduced.
Publishers have long recognized the benefit of having books in libraries. Libraries are the gateway to new titles, authors and characters. We promote their authors for free. We buy their older stock as replacements. We buy multiple copies of hardcover books. Nothing about the format of the book changes what is mutually beneficial to publishers and libraries in our long relationship.
